As the 41st annual Athens International Film and Video Festival came to a close Thursday night, the winners of the festival were announced for this prestigious film fest.
“On the list of film festivals, it is one of the bigger ones and, as a result, it brings in a lot of people and good films,” said Tim Jackson in a previous Post article, whose film, Wrestling with Iowa, was screened Wednesday afternoon.
Ruth Bradley, the director of the festival, announced the winners of this year’s festival, broken up into seven different categories.
The first was in animation, awarded to Salmon Deadly Sins. Directed by Steven Vander Meer, this U.S. short film was produced through the work of 5,000 salmon colored index cards.
The next category was short narrative, given to Thirteen Blue, by Zaklin Lentzou. This U.K./Greece collaboration is an intimate character study of a young teenage girl trying to make sense of her surrounding world.
Almost Family, from U.S. directors Remy Weber and Nick Zeig-Owens, won the feature narrative category. The comedy/drama follows a young woman yearning to find intimacy and family while platonically living with her gay ex-boyfriend.
Honorable mention in this section went to OJ: The Musical, from OU alum Jeff Rosenberg.
Israeli-based director Amit Gicelter took first place in short documentaries for his film Broken Branches, which animates the story of Gicelter’s grandmother as she was sent to Poland at 14 on the eve of the second World War.
OU film student Cory Pratt got an honorable mention for his film Notes From Another Room.
In the feature documentaries category, I Am a Visitor in Your World, Miguel Silveira looks at a twenty-year-old’s struggle with colon cancer in both documentary and biography form.
“Based on what we have heard, it’s a wonderful film festival and we are proud to have our film selected into it,” said Camille Thoman, who received an honorable mention in the feature documentary category for her movie The Longest Game.
