The Institute for Democracy in Education brings Teaching for Democratic Activism to Ohio University this weekend. The conference will run from Oct. 16 to Oct. 18 and, through workshops, will address educational issues that affect everyone from K-12 teachers and university professors to students and community activists.
Greg Michie, a Chicago teacher and author of Holler If You Hear Me: The Education of a Teacher and His Students, will be the keynote speaker. Michie's session takes place at 4 p.m. in McCracken 214. His presentation will focus on what his students have taught him over the years.
Institute director Jaylynne Hutchinson said the conference considers ideas such as giving students choices in learning and how they learn, connecting with the community, hands-on learning and relevancy in what students are learning.
The institute formed in 1985 in Southeastern Ohio and now has more than 20 regional offices. For more information, visit the institute's Web site, www.ohiou.edu/ide.
