OU Grounds Services clears off the sidewalk near Nelson Commons.

A slip and two broken teeth later, Ohio University to pay student’s dental bill

The Ohio Court of Claims ruled that Ohio University must foot the $2,870 dental bill for a student who slipped on the ice, causing her to break two teeth.

The Ohio Court of Claims has ruled that Ohio University must pay the dental bill for one of its students who slipped on an icy sidewalk this past February after she broke two of her teeth, according to court documents.

Both of her broken teeth required root canals and crowns, with the bill total coming out at $2,870, which her insurance refused to pay, according to court documents.

Hannah Scolaro, a sophomore from Akron, fell Feb. 21, as she waited at a bus stop in front of the Academic and Research Center. She was planning to go to Nelson Dining Hall when she slipped on the ice and broke her two front teeth on the sidewalk.

Scolaro and Alyssa Menosky were going to take the bus in order to eat at Nelson, as Boyd Dining Hall was closed during the Spring Semester due to renovations, court documents said.

OU argued that Scolaro should have been more aware of her surroundings due to the accumulation of snow and ice.

Scolaro expressed that OU didn’t salt sidewalks at the university bus stop, even though the university had done so at other sidewalks around.

The court found that OU didn’t comply with the snow and ice removal policy set forth in an Athens City ordinance, according to court documents. That ordinance requires the owners of facilities shovel or salt all sidewalks adjacent to their buildings.

Offenders of that law can face minor misdemeanor charges, according to previous Post reports.

The claim was filed on April 6, and the decision was ruled on Aug. 11.
