Volleyball: Ohio ousts Akron and Buffalo

Ohio earns their 30th consecutive regular season conference victory as Kosiorek sets new service record.

Buffalo was still in its locker room as it trailed Ohio by two games to none at halftime.

Where were the Bobcats? They were on the court, practicing their sets and digs.

Ohio's dedication to perfecting its skills — particularly on defense — is one reason it earned sweeps over Akron and Buffalo this weekend.

With the two wins, Ohio (16-3, 6-0 Mid-American Conference) has now swept four straight matches, as well as five of their last seven. They’ve also won 30 consecutive regular season games in the MAC.

Ohio's first win of the weekend over Akron was highlighted by defense, a trait that’s become common for the Bobcats over their years of dominance within the conference.

Ohio had 47 digs on the evening, with 21 coming from senior libero Meredith Ashy. They also held the Zips to a .096 hitting percentage.

Where the Bobcats did struggle, however, was at the service line, where coach Deane Webb said his team lacked focus.

Ohio had 15 service errors, with four coming from the usually reliable senior setter Abby Gilleland.

Webb said the team would try to improve its performance at the line the next day versus Buffalo, but he certainly wasn’t predicting a historic turnaround.

Sophomore outside hitter Jaime Kosiorek did just that, setting a school record with nine service aces.

“I didn't even know it was a school record,” she said. “I loved hearing my teammates cheer me on; they motivated me the whole match.”

Ohio cut their service errors to just seven against Buffalo and totaled 16 aces.

Their ability to adjust on the fly is just one of multiple reasons the Bobcats are still undefeated in the conference and remain a "favorite" to win it next month.
