The Kennedy Museum of Art will be starting their annual Emerging Artists exhibition

The annual Emerging Artists exhibit at the Kennedy Museum of Art highlights artists from Logan High School.

The walls of the Kennedy Museum of Art are often filled with works by established artists, but the space isn’t just for professionals.

Through the Emerging Artists exhibition, the Kennedy reaches out to display the work of high-school age artists. Each year, the museum picks a different high school from the area to highlight.

This year’s art is sourced from Logan High School.

“It’s a way to showcase some high school student’s work and have the students come down for a reception with their families so they can come and see their artwork,” said Lisa Quinn, the educational programs coordinator for the Kennedy Museum of Art.

Once the high school was chosen, students entered a competition to get the chance to showcase their work. The exhibit is made up of photographs, something Quinn said was chosen as the medium due to photograph sizing being fairly similar. This allows curators to predict how much space the exhibit will need.

“This has been a wonderful additional opportunity for students to create work,” said Jeremy McAfee, the Logan High School fine arts instructor and an Ohio University alumnus.

Participants were able to submit two pieces per student. The process allowed students the opportunity to review their photography portfolios critically, McAfee said, and have an additional conversation regarding design and conception. Only 16 students were selected for the exhibition.

“As our high school students have varying interests and focus as it relates to their artwork, so too do their portfolios,” said McAfee. “The selections for this exhibition are extremely diverse. This work is an array portraiture, landscape and still-life of varying technical and conceptual levels.”

Bethany Anzalone, a Logan High School student, submitted a photo of an old barn donor latch with the sunlight shining through.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to have my artwork displayed in other communities,” she said. “I plan on majoring in graphic design so this has been a fun and helpful experience for me.”

The exhibition will start on Thursday and will continue through May.

“Logan High School is blessed with a richly talented population of young people,” said McAfee. “We have a wonderfully supportive community regarding the arts.”
