Editorial: It's important to see ‘The Hunting Ground’

The film is showing this week at the Athena.

The Athena Cinema is showing The Hunting Ground until Thursday evening.

If you think that title sounds incredibly serious, that’s because it’s meant to be taken as such.

The Hunting Ground, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, discusses sexual assault on college campuses and, specifically, how college officials often mismanage instances of sexual assault.

The movie is being shown for free at the Court Street theater and we urge all to watch. Thursday’s showtimes are 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

According to a recent survey of 27 large public universities conducted by The Association of American Universities, 27.2 percent of female seniors said they had experienced some kind of unwanted sexual contact since entering college.

That is unacceptable.

Starting a conversation about sexual assault on college campuses is only one step toward a solution and is certainly something that more universities should be doing. But change isn’t going to happen just from talking about it.

Administration at all universities — Ohio University and otherwise — should use the film as a wake-up call that it’s time to step to the plate to assist survivors of sexual assault and to create measures to prevent similar crimes from happening in the first place.
