Athens City Council preview: Members hope to change city trash law

Athens City Council members have changes to the city trash law on tap.

Members of Athens City Council will meet in committees tonight at 7 p.m. at the Athens City Building, 8 E Washington, to further deliberate on suggested changes to trash laws, along with other miscellaneous items.

Over the past two weeks, debate over the wording of possible to the trash laws have been brought into question at council sessions.

The amendment calls for an increase in fines for those whose trash is visible from the street, setting the fine for a first offense at $50. Last week at council, it was decided that for corner lots or through lots, trash must be hidden from the building’s address.

Numerous members of city council have expressed concern over possible exemptions to the law.

Councilmen and councilwomen will also discuss parking for the upcoming Athens Halloween Weekend
