Jackie O’s is hosting two cover bands this weekend; one will cover The Talking Heads and the other will cover Pink Floyd.
Dads from all over may be surprised to hear “The Great Gig In The Sky” and “Psycho Killer” blaring from the speakers at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery this weekend. No, it’s not the actual bands, Pink Floyd and The Talking Head, but some quality local cover bands.
Jackie O’s, 24 W. Union St., is hosting Same As It Ever Was covering The Talking Heads on Friday and Any Colour You Like covering Pink Floyd on Saturday.
“Any Colour has played Dads weekend for the last three or four years,” said Joe Etgen, entertainment director for Jackie O's. “So it's kind of become a tradition for Saturday of Dads Weekend that their local fans and OU dads can look forward to.”
Same As It Ever Was is a seven-piece ensemble from Knoxville, Tennessee, who came together out of their mutual love and respect for the band The Talking Heads in the summer of 2004 and have continued on since.
“I was aware of this music throughout my childhood but as I grew older never really delved deeply into it until I rediscovered it in my late teens early twenties,” said Curtis Geren, the general manager of Same As It Ever Was. “I discovered that my voice could take on a very David Byrne-like quality and we soon vowed that one day we would start a tribute. Three or four years later in 2005 we finally did it and have been playing ever since.”
The band performs two full sets of music totaling roughly three hours of music. Geren added that fans are welcome to make requests and the band will definitely play them if its members currently have the song under their fingers.
“It quickly grew from something we were only planning on doing locally, into a band that tours all over the southeast,” Geren said.
Any Colour You Like, also a seven-piece ensemble, formed in Athens performing full albums from Pink Floyd’s discography.
“Any Colour will be bringing in a top notch light show Saturday night,” Etgen said. “Any Colour is Athens based and has headlined Boogie on the Bricks, Athens Halloween Block Party, performed at ColorDance, Hoopla in the Hills. They will be performing Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety along with many other Hits from the vast Pink Floyd catalog.”
Whether it’s the jam psychedelic tunes of Pink Floyd or the striped down rock of Talking Heads, Etgen thinks dads will find something they can enjoy.
“Both Pink Floyd and The Talking Heads are liked by a wide range of crowds and are in that generation of timeless music that is tangible to the young and older audiences,” Etgen said.
