Ohio freshman Brian King came to Athens to run, not to play basketball like his brother, Stephen, or his sister, Susan.
Brian, whose brother is a sophomore guard for the Bobcats and whose sister is a redshirt junior guard at Stanford, will run cross country and track for Ohio.
Although Brian considered four other colleges, including Colorado State, Georgetown, Pennsylvania and Miami University, he chose Ohio largely because of his brother.
"I knew that our parents could come visit both of us," Brian said. "I could watch him play, he could watch me run."
Brian's family ties to basketball also include his brother-in-law, Curtis Borchardt, who is a rookie center for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association and his father, Gary, who played college basketball at Nebraska-Kearney.
Brian will not travel with the cross country team this Saturday to the Mel Brodt Invitational at Bowling Green, but is expected to run in Ohio's second meet, the Toledo Invitational, Sept. 20.
Brian is projected to run in the top seven for cross country and will run distances from 1,500 to 10,000 meters for track and field.
"He's a dedicated runner," coach Clay Calkins said. "We look forward to him being an excellent runner for the next four years."
During his senior year at Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, Minn., Brian posted a seventh-place finish in the cross country state meet and ran personal-best times of 4:22 for the mile and 15:47 for the 5,000 meters.
