Sen. Kamala Harris proposed a longer school day; the 2nd annual Harvest Hoedown is happening this Saturday

Today is Friday, Nov. 7. Here’s what you need to know:

Good morning,

As if the school day wasn’t already long enough, Sen. Kamala Harris introduced a bill that would lengthen the school day by three hours for 500 schools.

The bill is meant to target school districts that have a large population of low-income families who can’t afford child care for their children after school. The hope is that the increase will be better for working parents’ schedules so they can bypass child care.

The bill proposes that the five-year grants of up to $5 million that the school districts receive could go to enrichment activities such as, “music, arts, athletics, writing and engineering.” However, it leaves the ultimate decision up to the school administrators of each school district.

Teachers will get the option to work extra hours, but it is not required. If a teacher works overtime, they would receive the same level of pay that would be earned during normal school hours.

This is part of Harris’s plan for sweeping public education reforms that she has pushed for during her presidential candidacy. Other reforms that she has proposed include increasing the average teacher salary by $13,500.
