Sherri Saines, reference and instruction librarian, plans to talk about finding feminist voices in non-traditional research in the Women’s Center’s first Brown Bag lunch of the year.
Sherri Saines wants you to leave her presence knowing that you’ll “never vote stupid.”
As an Alden Library reference and instruction librarian, Saines will be leading the first Brown Bag Lunch and Learn with the Women’s Center, discussing different ways of finding feminist voices during research.
Saines is the subject librarian with the University College, linguistics, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, human and consumer sciences which includes fashion and tourism. She also helps anyone who needs help in the library, especially when it comes to research topics.
Saines said it can be difficult especially in women’s history and research to find resources to use, but that does not mean they do not exist.
“(We will talk about) things you don’t think about — a thousand places to find information about women, gender and sexuality, that you wouldn’t have thought of,” Saines said. “For example, using posters as text.”
Saines said this will be her third Brown Bag.
“Although one of the main points of feminist research is to give voice to the voiceless, so often you don’t find what you are looking for in traditional resources,” Saines said. “If you’re nobody in no place, nobody studies you, so how do you find that voice? So that’s what (this discussion) is about.”
Although Saines will do a brief introduction to the resources available in the library, she asks that individuals bring issues they are having in research projects. This way, Saines can use it as an example during her discussion.
Sarah Jenkins, program coordinator for the LGBT and Women’s centers, said it is important for women to know how to use these tools, such as unique research and databases.
Whether it is research related to Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies or not, Saines enjoys it all. Individuals who come to listen may not turn into mini-librarians, but that’s not her goal.
“My goal is that nobody that crosses my path in life goes on to vote stupid,” she said.
Saines said she can be available by appointment, found in Alden or might be the one chatting you back on Alden’s “Live Chat.”
The discussion will take place in the Women’s Center in Baker Center, starting at 12 p.m. and is open to anyone who would like to attend.
