Thawing pipes in the basement of Baker University Center have led to a malfunction that caused several false fire alarms to trigger since the beginning of the week.
When false alarms were triggered, the entire building was evacuated for a brief time.
“The water froze in the recent cold weather and is now thawing in the relatively warmer weather,” Katie Quaranta, Ohio University spokeswoman, said in an email. “As the pipes thaw, sensors detect water flows, triggering the fire alarm system as it is designed to do.”
The system has been secured and the parking garage is closed until officials can fix the problem, Quaranta said.
