In a recent study by The Post of the salaries of men and women head coaches in the Mid-American Conference, Ohio places first in average salary of men head coaches and third in average salary of women head coaches.
These numbers, however, do not include Bowling Green and Buffalo, which did not reply to requests for information by deadline.
Ohio's head coaches for men's sports average $90,612, beating out Western Michigan's $89, 875 average and nearly $14,000 more than the MAC average OF?. Ohio's men's assistant coaches average $43,192, third in the MAC behind only Toledo and Western Michigan.
Ohio's highest-paid men's coaches are basketball's Tim O'Shea and football's Brian Knorr, who earn $153,000 and $150,000 per year, respectively. O'Shea ranks first in the MAC among schools that reported salaries, while Knorr is second, trailing only Mike Kruczek of Central Florida.
In addition to O'Shea and Knorr, Ohio features two men's coaches, Elmore Banton and Greg Werner, who are the highest-paid in their sports, while baseball's Joe Carbone ranks second.
Banton, who will conclude his 23-year career as head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams at the NCAA Regional meet this weekend at Ohio State, earns $77,884 per year, far more than the MAC average of $59,221 for cross country and track and field head coaches.
Werner, who has spent eight seasons at the helm of Ohio's men's and women's swimming and diving teams, also ranks first in the MAC for annual salary at his position, at $59,959.
Carbone, who recently led the baseball team to a third-place finish in the MAC Tournament, trails only Fred Decker, who has spent 27 years as the coach for the Western Michigan baseball team.
Ohio's staff also includes two of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the conference in men's basketball assistant John Rhodes and swimming and diving assistant Andy Kershaw.
Ohio's women head coaches place third in the conference in average salary, trailing only Toledo and Western Michigan. Ohio's women's coaches average a salary of $55,909. Ohio's assistants, however, average only $30,051, more than only Northern Illinois among the twelve reporting schools.
Stacy Strauss is the highest-paid women's soccer coach in the MAC at $47,850, more than $8,000 above the average of $39,276. Strauss was named Division I Coach of the Year by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association in 2002 after a 15-5-2 season.
Basketball's Lynn Bria and softball's Roanna Brazier each rank second in the conference in annual salary for head coaches in their sports. Bria, who recently completed her fourth season at Ohio, earns $94,781 per year, trailing only Toledo's Mark Ehlen. Brazier, who has spent seven years in Athens, earns $50,072 per year, more than every MAC softball coach except Central Michigan's Margo Jonker. Jonker has coached the Chippewas for 24 seasons and has won 10 conference championships.
As for women's assistant coaches, Ohio's Andrea Costa is the highest-paid assistant softball coach in the MAC, earning $33,524 annually. This past season was her fourth with the Bobcats.
