Director of the Ohio University Women's Center Dr. Susanne Dietzel gives the graduate student senate body a presentation about the new graudate assistant parental leave policy at the graduate student senate meeting in Walter Hall, at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014. The new policy includes leave for women giving birth, partners who become new parents, and parents who adopt a child.

GSS passes a resolution that puts a GSS member on the Student Legal Services Board

At Graduate Student Senate’s February meeting, a resolution was passed that appoints a GSS member to the Center of Student Legal Services Board.

Graduate Student Senate may soon have a permanent spot on Student Legal Services’ Board of Directors.

A resolution passed at Monday’s GSS meeting appointing Governmental Affairs Commissioner Chelsea Foster to the CSLS Board. She will attend their monthly board meetings.

The CSLS Board is in the process of revising their bylaws and this will be a permanent position on the Board, said Keith Wilbur, chair of the CSLS Board.

Changing the bylaws makes the relationship more formal and ensures that Graduate Student Senate will have a spot on the Board for years to come instead of having to rely on the open application process, Wilbur said.

Several former GSS presidents have also served as the chairs of the Board of Directors, Wilbur said. But this year, GSS has not had a presence on the board, which led to a GSS boycott of the service.

Graduate Student Senate President Carl Edward Smith III effectively ended the boycott when he encouraged students to pay the $12 fee and use the service.

“CSLS provides extremely valuable services and I encourage students to re-enroll,” Smith said.

The resolution to amend the requirement of immediate graduation of the senate’s Board of Elections chair was also passed.

Previously, the rules for the Board of Elections chair stipulated that the chair must be a graduate student who is not a member of GSS and be in their last term of school.

“We think its time to change that,” John Strohl, Vice President for Communication, said. “It really doesn’t make sense.”

Also, GSS was having trouble finding an eligible student under the old rules. “The Board of Elections Chair must be someone who has high integrity, not be biased and has enough free time,” Smith said.

A separate resolution was also passed which appointed former GSS Academic Commissioner Mitchell Smith as the Board of Elections Chair.

“I personally trust Mitch,” President Smith said.

Smith, a Ph.D. student in the history department, is not graduating this term.

New members Ryan Lovingood, Will Klatt and Emily Zarack were also appointed to GSS at Monday’s meeting.
