Ohio played a second game against nonconference opponent Marshall on Tuesday night. The break in conference play opened an opportunity for some players who hadn't played much this season to get some in-game action. The Bobcats struggled offensively and on the mound, though, as they lost by a final score of 10-3.
Marshall got to starter Colin Sells immediately and it scored a run in the first and second innings. However, Ohio responded in the top of the third. A.J. Rausch had a sacrifice fly to left field and scored Michael Richardson for the Bobcats' first run. In that same inning, Spencer Harbert also lined out to center to score Xavier Haendiges and tie the game at two.
Unfortunately for the Bobcats, the Thundering Herd offense could not be stopped. The only time Marshall didn't score a run in an inning was the eighth. It scored one run in the fourth and sixth innings and two runs in the fifth, third and seventh, respectively. Marshall also tripled Ohio's total hits as it had 15, while Ohio only had five.
Although the game was viewed mostly as a rest day and a chance to rest players who are consistently in the lineup, Tuesday's loss will still hurt Ohio after it split its series against Toledo last weekend.
Sells ended his day after two innings, where he gave up three hits and two runs and added two strikeouts. The only pitcher to not give up a run out of the seven used was Braxton Kelly. Kelly went only one inning, giving up zero hits and zero runs while striking out one.
Ohio will look to redeem itself this weekend as it will get back into Mid-American Conference play. Ohio will hop on the road to Ypsilanti, Michigan, to take on Eastern Michigan.
