An AEP Ohio official confirmed that an outage which has caused more than 3,400 Athens residents to lose power originated from equipment failure on Poston Station Road in The Plains.
As of 11:34 p.m., more than 3,400 customers remained without power, according to AEP Ohio's website.
AEP officials estimate that power will be fully restored at around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The outage also affected areas on Ohio University's campus, according to Director of Residential Housing Pete Trentacoste.
Power was restored to all residence halls on OU's campus at about 11:00 p.m., Trentacoste said.
"I can speak for the Residence Halls — based on my travels and reports I have received — power is back on," he said in a tweet.
Hocking and Morgan counties are also experiencing power outages.
Use caution when driving in areas affected by the power outage, and treat non-functioning stop lights as stop signs.
