Meth lab found in home with children

An Athens man was indicted Monday on two felony counts for allegedly having a methamphetamine lab in a resident where two children were living.

David Schuetzman, 50, was indicted on one count of illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs and one count of endangering children by an Athens Grand Jury.

Schuetzman and Samantha Hummel, 25, were arrested after the Athens County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Team executed a search warrant at 16590 Canaanville Road in Athens on Feb. 13, according to a post on Sheriff Pat Kelly’s Facebook page.

Deputies had received information that an active meth lab was being operated in the residence and that children were living there. Two young children and an elderly woman were in the residence with Schuetzman and Hummel, of Glouster, when the warrant was executed, according to the post.

The NET deputies found the lab in the residence and garage, which the children had full access to. The deputies seized 16 bottles they believed to contain meth and found syringes in the bedroom, according to the post.

Hummel was also charged with illegal assembly or possession of chemicals of the manufacture of drugs and endangering children. Her case is still in Athens County Municipal Court, according to the court’s website.

The NET deputies neutralized the lab and took it into evidence. Athens County Children Services took custody of the children, according to the post.

He and Hummel are both being held on $50,000 bond at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail.

Schuetzman and Hummel could be sentenced to a maximum of 19 years in prison and a maximum fine of $35,000 if convicted of both charges at a trial, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Schuetzman is due back in court March 6 for his arraignment hearing.
