Track and Field: 'Cats prepare for Columbus competition

It’s the weekend and that means more track and field.

Ohio will head to Columbus to have yet another weekend of strong competition against Ohio State, Toledo, Indiana State, Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Western Michigan, Youngstown State, Akron and several other teams.

This weekend proves that there will not only be a high level of competition but a handful of Mid-American Conference competition as well.

“I like getting MAC competition at this point in the year,” coach Clay Calkins said. “We get to see where we rank amongst the other top athletes.”

Calkins believes that his top athletes will fare well against the strong competition. He believes that is all of his athletes need to step up to the challenge.

One athlete the Bobcats are counting on is senior distance runner Juli Accurso. After missing all of the indoor season and five weeks of the outdoor season, she will make her debut this weekend.

“She will be running in the 1,500-meter run this weekend,” Calkins said. “She is a high-level competitor and is an integral part of our progress the rest of the year.”

Names such as Donyelle Brown, Delaney Bolger, Krista Roehlig and Melissa Thompson have already made multiple appearances in the final rankings and should motivate the other athletes on the Ohio track and field squad to join them.

There’s no telling what Brown will do this week. After breaking a program record last week, she could be looking at another personal record, pushing the bar higher and higher.

The Bobcats have their work cut out for them with the type of competition meeting in Columbus, but they hope to produce the same accomplishments they have the past few weeks.

Calkins wants all the Bobcats to make the finals of their respective events.

“If you’re making finals, you’re doing something right,” he said.
