Farmers Market to retain location, new hours

The Athens Farmers Market has decided to stay put at its location despite earlier speculation that the market would try to move now that Texas Roadhouse takes up much of the space that was once used for the market.

The market will continue, at least for the next year, to operate from the 1000 E. State St. parking lot with new hours, said Maureen Burns-Hooker, who does media and promotions for the Market.

In the meantime, the market will be looking for a permanent location, which would require about five acres worth of space, Burns-Hooker said.

Though the market is paying more for its lease this year — Burns-Hooker described it as a “commercial rate” — she added that she was thankful to the Texas Roadhouse, the Athena Grand Theater and the property owners for helping to facilitate the market. Starting Saturday April 5, the market will begin their new hours: 9 a.m. to noon.
