Wendy’s “Spongebob” Krabby Patty review

It is time to rev up those fryers because customers are surely going to be hungry to try the new Krabby Patty burger at Wendy’s.

In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Spongebob Squarepants,” Wendy’s and Paramount partnered to release a Krabby Patty meal. The meal includes a Krabby Patty Kollab burger and a new Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty.

The meal became available in the U.S., Canada, and Guam Oct. 8 for customers wanting a taste of the iconic sandwich. The menu items are worth the wait for Spongebob fans speculating about the burger’s taste and Wendy’s customers eager to try the limited-time collaboration.

Wendy’s burger differs from the television show, but the Krabby Patty still represents the iconic recipe from Bikini Bottom. According to Wendy’s website, the burger is “a quarter pound of Wendy's fresh, never frozen beef, two slices of melty American cheese, crisp lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and a top-secret Krabby Kollab sauce on a toasted premium bun.” The new frosty is the vanilla frosty with a pineapple mango-flavored puree swirled into the cup.

The collaboration is the first time the Krabby Patty appears on real-world menus. Fans in Los Angeles enjoyed an exclusive first bite of the Krabby Patty Oct. 7 in an immersive drive-thru experience.

The Krabby Patty tastes similar to the classic Dave’s Single cheeseburgers at Wendy’s. Customers can order it in single, double or triple burger patties. Instead of including ketchup and mayo, the bun is smeared with the “secret sauce” that tastes similar to McDonald’s Big Mac sauce or Thousand Island dressing. If customers want to channel their inner Plankton and get their hands on the secret formula, it is worth the try.

Overall, the sandwich could have used branded packaging to make it stick out. When customers order the sandwich, it looks like an ordinary Dave’s Single wrapped in the Wendy’s silver burger wrap in the bag. The sandwich was also a little underwhelming to what was expected from longtime Spongebob fans. It feels uncreative and will leave fans running to the Chum Bucket for something better.

The meal comes with Wendy’s fries and the new pineapple mango frosty. While the frosty is easily the best part of the meal, it should have used more pineapple than mango syrup. Spongebob lives in a pineapple, so the flavors were on the theme. The frosty is also one of Wendy’s better flavors it has had in a while.

For those wanting the Krabby Patty meal, it costs around $11 after tax and can be found at any participating Wendy’s location.
