Ohio University announced Tuesday that the Beta chapter of Delta Tau Delta has been suspended for four years from the university's campus.
According to a university news release, an internal investigation found the fraternity responsible for numerous Student Code of Conduct violations, including:
- Furnishing false information to university officials
- Alcohol beverages violation: selling, distributing or furnishing alcohol
- Alcohol beverages violation: furnishing or causing to be furnished/alcohol to intoxicated persons
- Alcohol beverages violation: student organizations
- Disruptive conduct: causing, inciting or participating in any disturbance
- Disruptive conduct: failure to comply
- Harmful behavior: reckless but not accidental behavior
- Hazing: coerced consumption
- Violation of university policy: interim 44.102/Presidential health directives.
Jenny Hall-Jones, interim vice president of student affairs, sent a notice to the fraternity July 13 informing it of its suspension. The suspension comes shortly after Collin’s Law — an anti-hazing bill — was signed into Ohio Law by Gov. Mike DeWine on July 6.
Delta Tau Delta and another OU fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, received cease and desist notices Feb. 9 and Feb. 8, respectively, according to a previous Post report. Investigations into the fraternities were initiated by the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility shortly after, based on allegations that the groups had risked the “health and safety” of their members.
However, on March 11, Alpha Phi Alpha received notice that its cease and desist order had been lifted. According to a letter from the Associate Director of Community Standards and Student Responsibility Mary Kate Kennedy to Alpha Phi Alpha, the investigation into the organization found “insufficient evidence” to formally charge the fraternity.
According to a statement from Ariel Tarosky, director of Sorority and Fraternity Life at OU, former members of Delta Tau Delta will not be able to join another social fraternity or start another fraternity at the university. However, these individuals are eligible to be members of other campus clubs and organizations.
Delta Tau Delta will be eligible to apply for reinstatement as a fraternity at OU in 2025.
