From The Editor's Desk: New columnists, social media emphasis among improvements for 2015

It’s the time of the semester where it’s common for the editor to proclaim something along the lines of, “New year, new Post,” touting the sweeping improvements made to the publication while students were away from campus.

It’s the time of the semester where it’s common for the editor to proclaim something along the lines of, “New year, new Post,” touting the sweeping improvements made to the publication while students were away from campus.

We’re not quite going that far this semester, instead opting to stay the course we established in the fall while making subtle improvements that directly benefit readers. There’s something to be said for consistency, and we have chosen to sink our resources into news gathering and presentation instead of making widespread changes to our newspaper and website.

This involves establishing several initiatives that directly benefit readers:

  • We now post stories from the next day’s paper to our website beginning at 6 p.m. the night before, as opposed to early the next morning. This is in addition to stories we publish to our website throughout the day. There is now a more continual flow of new content on thepostathens.com than ever before.

  • We’re in the process of hiring more columnists who will debut over the coming weeks. Each will provide a knowledgeable, thought-provoking take on a topic of student interest, such as campus activism, politics, economics and the environment.

  • We’re doubling down our emphasis on social media, doing our best to relate to those of you who primarily interact with The Post through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  • We’re also recruiting the next round of students who will one day take over as leaders of this publication. As a publication that is entirely staffed by students — the exception being our salaried business manager — it’s important to introduce newcomers to our ranks each semester. If you’re interested in seeing what we’re all about, please drop me a line.

These changes, and others that are in the works, are made with the ambition of further establishing The Post as part of your daily routine — this semester and for years to come.

As always, thanks for reading.
