Athens Halloween block party canceled due to COVID-19

The city of Athens announced Monday no Halloween block party will take place this year due to COVID-19.

In a news release, the city cited an increase in active coronavirus cases as well as the “highly transmissible” Delta variant as further reasoning for suspending the event.

At the Sept. 13 City Council meeting, Service Safety Director Andy Stone said at the time, his recommendation would be to cancel Halloween festivities but decided to wait until closer to Oct. 1 to make a final decision, according to a previous Post report. At the time, Council had authorized street closures for the block party.

Streets will remain open, and no activities, bandstands or vendors will be scheduled, according to the release.
