Wrestling: Ohio earns third consecutive win with trouncing of Buffalo

Ohio wrestling won its third-straight match, besting Buffalo 31-7.

There's no place like home, especially if you're the Bobcats.

Friday night, Ohio earned a 23-10 victory against Northern Illinois. Sunday, it kept the momentum going when it traveled to Buffalo and won 31-7, giving the Ohio its third-straight victory.

“It was a nice win on the road," Ohio coach Joel Greenlee said. "We wrestled hard up and down the lineup. We really have some guys stepping up and wrestling well.”

To start the match, Ohio (8-3, 3-3 MAC) heavyweight Jesse Webb lost to Jake Gunning by way of a 3-1 decision giving the Bulls an early 3-1 match lead. Webb’s record on the season fell to 8-8.

125-pounder Shakur Laney got Ohio on the board with a 6-4 victory over Buffalo’s Kyle Akins. Newly ranked Cam Kelly, who is now ranked 13th at 133 lbs., earned a pin 1:02 into the first period giving Ohio its first lead of the match.

From there, Ohio's Noah Forrider extended the Bobcats lead with a hard fought 2-1 victory due to riding time over Brandon Lapi.

Redshirt senior party Chino added a 9-4 victory at 157 pounds.  It was the 14th win of the season for Chino. At 165-pounds Ohio added six more points with a dominant performance ending in a late second period fall for redshirt freshman Austin Reese.

To finish the dual, Ohio’s final three wrestlers, 11th ranked Cody Walters, Andrew Romanchik, and 13th ranked Phil Wellington had the task of preserving a 21-7 match lead.

The trio not only preserved the lead, but added to it. Walters had a 5-2 decision over Muhamed McBryde. Romanchik earned a 2-1 riding time victory over Joe Ariola. Wellington ended the dual with a 12-4 major decision. Their records for the season now stand at 14-2, 7-5 and 15-3 respectively.
