Four of Athens' seasoned solo musicians will perform individual segments before finishing the performance with a first time collective set as a band this Saturday at O'Hooley's Pub, 24 W. Union St.
Ohio University seniors Adam Remnant and Mike Brennan, graduate student Tony Xenos and graduate Cathy Wicks will join each other on stage after their solo sets. The musicians will band together to perform three picks from each artists' favorite original material. Remnant will play guitar, Brennan will be on bass guitar, Xenos will play drums and Wicks will also be on guitar with all members sharing vocals.
Xenos said the idea for the Musician's Potluck performance came to him when he was looking to book a show at O'Hooley's for November.
The musicians on the bill seemed like they could handle something like this. Plus
I'd been itching to play drums again said Xenos.
Most of the members played together previously or were familiar with each other's work.
Tony and I go way back to freshman year on South Green said Wicks. We've played together lots of times. I think Adam jumped up on stage when we were trying to play a Beatles song once - if I recall correctly
none of us knew the song. It was classic.
Remnant said they have prepared for the show by giving each other recordings of their songs to familiarize themselves with one another's work.
I've been practicing about two hours a day on drums
said Xenos. I think I got it.
All members have a history of performing in Athens. Xenos often plays at Donkey Coffee & Espresso, 17 1/2 W. Washington St., The Union, 18 W. Union St., and Casa Cantina, 4 W. State St. He also performs with his band, Southeast Engine. He describes his sound as eclectic power folk.
I try to keep my style open
he said. My last albums have stretched to include even some rap tunes.
Wicks said she used to perform at The Dugout, which is a bar that closed several years ago, O'Hooley's and Casa Cantina, although she prefers playing coffee shops like the Donkey and The Front Room for more intricate stuff. When playing solo, she said she often performs ballads but when playing with a band she rocks out like a diva.
Remnant is also a member of Southeast Engine, along with Kim Casio, and said he tends to gravitate toward The Union. He said he is looking forward to performing with Xenos, Wicks and Brennan.
It's definitely a new experience (for me)
he said. It should be fun.
Brennan could not be reached for comment.
