Jack (Alexander Calvert) is too dangerous for Thursday’s episode of Supernatural. If you couldn’t watch the episode live, here’s what you missed:
There is a string of suspicious, biblical-themed deaths
In last week's episode, Rowena (Ruth Connell) confirmed that Jack accidentally killed Mary (Samantha Smith).
This week’s episode picks up with the hunters that knew Mary gathering to talk about her impact. It wouldn’t be a complete hunter’s life until Bobby (Jim Beaver) walks in and throws a machete to a wraith’s head, posing as a hunter.
Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Cas (Misha Collins) became suspicious of deaths with a biblical element to them. They find an atheist author and psychologist, Dr. Harrison Tate (Giles Panton) who has been turned into a pillar of salt, like Lot’s wife in the Old Testament. They find another report that the group swallowed a woman who was accused of being a fake health healer. In a prayer group, Jack strikes down Pastor Ames (Kurt Long) because Ames said he didn’t believe in Jack. To punish Ames, Jack made worms crawl out out of Ames’s face — just like in Acts.
It’s been awhile since the Heaven arc has been in play, so it was a nice change of pace from the Lucifer and Michael storyline.
Duma manipulates Jack
Cas finds out that Duma (Erica Cerra) manipulates Jack, which is why Jack killed those people.
During the killings, Duma tells Jack that Mary wasn’t his fault and he deserves a second chance. Duma mentions Sam and Dean; she says that they would appreciate his efforts.
Jack is still a child, so he’s malleable. He believes this and sits on the throne, hearing the prayers to God.
When Cas comes to rescue Jack, he sees that Duma is having him make angels, which Jack thinks is the right thing. Duma is currently the ruler of Heaven, since Naomi (Amanda Tapping) failed. Cas speaks to Duma privately, and when she threatens Mary and John Winchester’s heaven, Cas kills her.
Sam and Dean try to stop Jack
Dean convinces Sam of a plan to stop Jack with the Ma’lak Box, which Dean was going to use to kill himself when he was possessed by Michael. Sam called down to Jack and asked to “talk things out.” Sam and Dean tell Jack that he needs to go in the box to keep others and himself safe while they finish the spell to fix Jack’s soul. The catch is there is no spell, but Jack doesn’t know that. Jack obliges in and doesn’t catch on until after Dean locks it.
When Cas finds out about the plan, he is furious, but it doesn’t last long. Jack escapes. When the trio run to investigate the loud crash, yellow eyes meet them.
Dean takes Mary’s death the hardest
After Mary’s visitation, the audience sees Dean break down and cry, which is rare. Dean doesn’t express emotion, but it’s warranted.
With the series finale approaching next year, it’s very possible the writers are setting up the scene where Sam and Dean have no one left. Mary just died, Jack will probably die, and Cas gave himself up to the darkness.
Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
