Through Ohio University’s main campus, regional campuses and online courses, about 15,330 students took a summer class of some kind.
In 2017, 15,612 students took summer classes at OU. In 2016, there were 15,964 students enrolled in summer courses; 15,691 students were enrolled in 2015.
Numbers regarding summer online courses are still considered preliminary because they have yet to be submitted to the state. OU doesn’t anticipate any significant changes in data, University Spokesman Jim Sabin said.
Courses offered in past summers have remained stable, Craig Cornell, senior vice provost for strategic enrollment management, said.
“The actual number of classes offered has only varied each year within 1 (percent),” Cornell said in an email. “It has been relatively stable with an average of 2,923 sections over that time frame annually.”
The majority of OU students take their summer courses online. Cornell says that 6,307 students took courses online in 2018 and 6,044 took classes at the Athens Campus, while 2,979 students went to regional campuses.
“You really have to stay on top of your work, especially in an online class,” Gabbi Vallota, a senior studying studio art, said.
Some students choose to stay in Athens and take classes on the main campus over the summer.
“I loved summer classes here,” Riley Lange, a senior studying international business, said in an email. “The buildings weren’t crowded and it gave me more room to study.”
There are a couple drawbacks of summer classes, some of which include how content moves at a faster pace than fall and spring courses, Vallota said in an email.
“Summer classes go fast for sure,” Vallota said in an email. “They have to cram so much information in such a short amount of time.”
