Bike path problems repaired

The problem of possible flooding of the Hocking River near the bike path bridge at the end of Courier Street has been solved.

Athens County Commissioners reached a decision at their meeting yesterday on how to resolve the logjam problem that is contributing to the river's possible flooding.

Kathy Bobo, a representative from Athens County Soil and Water Conservation District, reported that $14,000 was available from logjam removal funds from other counties. Athens County will use the money to remove the remaining logs, Commissioner Mark Sullivan said. Athens County maintenance already has started to remove some of the logs contributing to the problem.

Contractor Athens Excavating and Concrete, Inc. has been hired to complete the $12,000 project, said County Planner Bob Eichenberg. Final details need to be worked out with the company, but he believes construction will begin later next week.

In other business, the Athens County Sheriff's Office accepted a used cruiser from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Vern Castle, who has a good working relationship with Montgomery County officials, worked out the deal, Sullivan said. Montgomery County decided to donate the car because its county budget has more funds.

Because the cruiser is not equipped with accessories such as a radio and light bar, the commissioners approved about $6,000 to be used to purchase the needed items, Sullivan said.
