Ohio continued the climb out of its early season rut at THE Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida. The Bobcats won two of their four games.
Here’s what happened this weekend at THE Spring Games:
Saturday: Games 1 and 2
Game 1 belonged to Caitlin Fogue.
St. Bonaventure led Ohio 4-0 by the top of the third inning. After the Bobcats loaded the bases with two singles and a reach on an error, Fogue hit a grand slam and tied the game. St. Bonaventure scored again by the bottom of the seventh inning, and the possibility of extra innings was looming.
With the bases loaded once again, Fogue sent another ball over the left field fence. Ohio started the weekend with a 9-5 walk-off victory. Fogue ended the day going 3-for-4 with eight RBI.
Ohio’s offense, however, stalled in Game 2.
Iowa scored in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Bobcats couldn’t muster a response, and the score didn’t chnage for the remainder of the game. The only three hits for Ohio came from Molly Troutman and Allie Englant. Troutman recorded a double and a single, while Englant earned a single.
Sunday: Games 3 and 4
Ohio started Sunday how it ended Saturday: unable to score.
The Bobcats were unable to capitalize in the fourth inning with runners on second and third base with only one out. South Dakota State scored two in the bottom of the fourth inning and neither team followed up on those runs. South Dakota State took Game 3, 2-0.
Ohio recorded five hits in the third game of the weekend and notched singles from Englant, Katie Yun, Caroline Spacek and Troutman. Alexa Holland recorded the only double.
The Bobcats’ 6-0 victory over Merrimack gave them the rebound they needed to end the weekend.
Ohio scored in every inning except the first and sixth. Spacek and Yun led the offense with a combined five hits and three RBI. Merrimack had two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but Ohio quickly shut down the Warriors and stranded the runners.
Sophomore Mackensie Kohl pitched a complete game, allowing no runs and four hits.
What’s next
Ohio (10-14) will head to Clearwater, Florida, for a doubleheader against Cleveland State and Providence on March 10.
