Softball: Ohio sweeps Bowling Green with walk-off

Jamie Wren entered the batter’s box knowing what needed to be done.

With her team in the bottom of the ninth inning of a scoreless game Sunday afternoon, Wren had an opportunity as the winning run was already on third base. Get a hit, win the game.

Wren did just that.

Her walk-off single to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Ohio a 1-0 win over Bowling Green at Ohio Softball Field, sweeping the series with the Falcons.

“I just thought to stay calm and get my pitch,” Wren said. “And that’s what I did.”

Her teammates helped her get to that point, though.

Morgan Geno led the ninth inning off with a double. After Alex Day’s grounder moved Geno to third, Dallas Messenger came in to pinch run. Messenger scored the winning run on Wren’s single.

The Bobcats’ sweep of Bowling Green was the first time they swept a Mid-American Conference opponent since March 24 and 25, when they swept Toledo.

Heading into the ninth inning, however, the Bobcats had just three hits.

The Falcons had none.

Ohio pitcher Savannah Jo Dorsey kept the Bobcats in the game with a masterful performance in the circle, taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up a single. She ended the game having allowed just one hit and with 15 strikeouts.

“I felt good,” Dorsey said. “I was having fun with the batters and I was like “I can go back out there if I need to.””

Dorsey provided the pitching performance the Bobcats needed. Wren provided the only run to get the win.

And the walk-off single was all Ohio needed to capture a three-game sweep over the weekend.
