Baseball: Everything to know for Ohio’s matchup with Dayton

Ohio snapped its nine-game losing streak after a series victory over the weekend on the road against Eastern Michigan. Ohio was able to win the final two games of the series after falling in game one of the series.

Dayton Notes

The Flyers are having a successful season under seventh-year coach Jayson King. They currently sit at third in the Atlantic-10 standings with a total record of 22-13. Dayton started its season with a splash, knocking off No. 6 Vanderbilt in Nashville.

Since that upset, Dayton has remained consistent with records above .500 when playing at home and on the road. Having won four out of its last five games, Dayton will certainly be a tough challenge for an Ohio team who has just recently gotten back to winning ways.

Player to Watch: David Mendez

Since making his college debut for Dayton against Vanderbilt this year, Mendez has been nothing short of phenomenal at the plate. In his first start for the team against No. 1 Wake Forest, he went 2-3 with a home run.

He remains on fire since that hot start, keeping his role in the starting lineup as a freshman and being named the Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Week on two separate occasions. Mendez currently sits fourth in the conference in batting average, and ninth in OPS. If Ohio’s pitching isn’t able to shut down the star freshman, he could turn the game on its head in no time.
