East State accident stalls daytime traffic

Three cars were involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon on East State Street by the intersection of May Street near Athens Auto Repair.

Athens Police and Fire responded at around 3:30 p.m. to the accident, where two of the cars were disabled and had to be removed from the scene by tow trucks. Debris from the accident was swept up by the firefighters. By 4:20 p.m., firefighters had cleaned up the debris and traffic was back to normal.

None of those involved in the accident were sent to the hospital, Athens firefighter Kevin Kinnard said.

People refused treatment from EMS but that doesn’t mean there were no injuries, Kinnard said, adding that he believes some of those involved in the accident would see their own doctor the next day.

The accident did result in a spill left by one of the vehicles, but firefighters did not need additional assistance in removing the substance.

“It was either transmission fluid or anti-freeze,” Kinnard said. “There were drains close that go to the river, so we used ‘cold clean’ to break up all of the stuff to not affect the fish or people.”

Athens Police officer Ron Brooks was on the scene, but unable to comment.
