Tonight’s City Council meeting will feature the voting on the much-discussed resolution to support the reversal of the Citizens United case, as well as a series of ordinances up for first and second readings.
Since Councilman Jeff Risner’s, D-2nd Ward, induction into the Athens City Council, he has been up in arms over the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v Federal Elections Commission. The decision awarded corporations first amendment rights as people, and can therefore spend unlimited monies in elections.
The resolution will show Athens’ support in the ongoing effort to reverse the ruling and prevent corporations from lobbying so heavily in the political process.
Also, being brought up for first reading tonight will be an ordinance to add a handicap ramp to Ohio University’s Bromley Hall. The ramp would use a portion of the city's right-of-way on West Union St., thus necessitating council’s input on the matter.
