How ESPN will affect viewing of Ohio athletics

Mid-American Conference fans will have to watch their favorite teams a little differently beginning April 12.

On Monday, ESPN launched ESPN+, a new subscription service that the company is trying. Starting next week, it will cost $4.99 per month to subscribe to the service. Customers can also pay the annual fee of $49.99. The service does not include ESPN, the cable channel. Those who have a cable subscription will still have access to all ESPN programs without additional fees via the ESPN app.

The service will consist of "hundreds of MLB, NHL, MLS games, thousands of college sports events, Top Rank Boxing, PGA Tour golf, Grand Slam tennis and much more," an ESPN news release reads.

Subscribers can also stream one free MLB and NHL game per day. NFL games are not covered by the service. Regional blackouts will still apply.

Related to college sports, the subscription will cover thousands of college events from numerous conferences, the MAC being one of them.

That means, however, that any Ohio athletic events previously on WatchESPN are now behind a paywall. If the game isn't on cable, then it will have to be streamed on ESPN+.

ESPN+ will cover football, soccer, women's volleyball, field hockey, basketball, swim and dive, wrestling, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, softball and baseball. The service will ensure that there will "more games than ever before," according to the news release.
