Weekender Briefs: What’s happening this week

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Here’s a list of some events still happening this week:

Friday, Aug. 21

Grand Reopening of Rollerbowl Lanes at 6 p.m., hosted by Rollerbowl Lanes. Join them for the grand reopening that features new renovations and new sanitation guidelines for COVID-19 safety.

Virtual Nelsonville Music Festival at 8 p.m., hosted by Stuart’s Opera House. Join the virtual stream of the festival for two nights of music right from your own living room. The fundraiser for Stuart’s will include artists CAAMP, Mandolin Orange, Todd Snider and more.

80s Night Live From Quarantine at 11 p.m., hosted by DJ Barticus and WOUB Public Media. Though places have started to open up, DJ Barticus feels mass gatherings aren’t the greatest idea for people’s health. Join the livestream through Twitch.tv or through Instagram @bartykutz.

Saturday, Aug. 22

Yoga in the Park at 9:30 a.m., hosted by Athens Yoga. Join various instructors for a socially distant outdoor yoga class. Links to pay the instructors are on the Facebook event page.

Monday, Aug. 24

Produce Auction at 5 p.m., hosted by Chesterhill Produce Auction. Join Chesterhill for the fresh, local and seasonal produce auction.

Tuesday, Aug. 25

Nourishing Networks Nelsonville at 6 p.m., hosted by Community Food Initiatives. Be a voice at the table for the discussion about barriers and strategies to food access in Nelsonville, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Register for the workshop by reaching out to ashley@commuityfoodinitiatives.org so CFI can prepare and send you a Zoom link.

Thursday, Aug. 27

Painting @ Home Serenity Series: Lotus Flower at 5:30 p.m., hosted by the Dairy Barn Arts Center. Join the Dairy Barn for a workshop from home. If you want to purchase a canvas through the Dairy Barn, you will also get a stencil to help ensure you complete a painting you really love. Invitation to Hope (virtual) Workshop — Making a Dream Pouch at 6:30 p.m., hosted by Nancy Gamon and the Athens poet laureate. Explore your hopes and dreams through creative writing exercises, and make a fabric dream holder. Click the ticket link on the Facebook event page to register. The event is for ages 17 and up.
