When I meet people from Ohio I tell them I’m from Wisconsin — figuring that regional Midwestern solidarity would outweigh rivalries in Washington, D.C.
I’ve relocated here to work with the United States Student Association, the nation’s oldest and largest student association fighting for college access and affordability.
The reason I’m writing this letter is because I understand that the Restart ticket at Ohio University is made up of leaders who believe in student rights on campus. I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of these leaders at conferences over the past years, and have been impressed with their dedication to student rights across the country.
There are many student governments structured to disempower students, leaving them without a voice. I experienced that for years at University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Restart ticket has a reasonable plan to expand democratic decision-making on issues such as rising tuition, shared governance, and student-worker wages.
Clearly, I wouldn’t be writing this if I didn’t think this election was of national importance. It has garnered the attention of national student rights advocates. The student government leaders I work with across the country are excited at the opportunity to work with the Restart ticket leaders at OU. We need your input and participation in solving challenges at the national level: mainly college access and affordability, and student debt.
The times are changing, and student-rights advocates are being elected to student governments across the country. I’m excited at the prospect of an OU student government restart, and that’s just what this ticket promises. We look forward to working with you and advancing your agenda in the halls of Congress, the White House and the Department of Education.
