The Second City improv plans to bring the laughs in Parents Weekend performance.
Back again to bring the laughs, The Second City improv group is coming to entertain the crowd during Ohio University’s Parents Weekend.
The Second City is a legendary improv group out of Chicago coming to OU and celebrating its 55th Anniversary Tour.
Comedians such as Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Amy Poehler, Steve Carell and Bill Murray were once a part of the The Second City Touring Company. The performance is part of the Campus Involvement Center’s Performing Arts and Concert Series.
“The quality of the show is great, which is why we bring them back every year we can,” said Andrew Holzaepfel, senior associate director of the Campus Involvement Center. “They are very interactive with the audience and it’s a lot of fun for families. Most people do enjoy this show.”
On the stages in Chicago, the shows tend to be a little more adult in nature. Anthony LeBlanc, a Second City performer and director of the show that is coming to OU, said the show will be suitable for families to attend.
“We are for sure doing a show that edits language, something close to a PG-13 movie; No hard swears,” LeBlanc said. “But we are still able to bring a funny and fun show without needing to use ‘four letter words.’ ”
The prominent company has stakes across the country and in Toronto along with touring companies, LeBlanc said.
“The Second City –– the world’s premier comedy theatre and school of improvisation –– specializes in sketch comedy and has been delighting audiences for 55 years,” LeBlanc said. “The Second City has resident companies in Chicago and Toronto consisting of six actors/writers each and three National Touring Companies with six actors each. We have shows seven nights a week on our resident stages in Chicago and Toronto; the shows consist of short scenes, songs and improvisations ranging anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes long.”
The Second City will be perform Saturday at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Leblanc promises that everything about this show is great, but perhaps folks will just have to come to see for themselves.
“This show is great because it is a unique and fun form of live theater,” said Leblanc. “This year we are celebrating our 55th anniversary … so we are showcasing some scenes that celebrate the rich comedic legacy of The Second City. It is a great time, that is unlike any theater show you have ever seen.”
