Exposing talent

A whole different game was played on The Convo court Thursday afternoon.

The annual Ohio University Student Research and Creative Activity Expo attracted a record-breaking 800 participants — who were all competing for one of a number of awards distributed by faculty.

The event, held each spring, showcased research and creative projects that OU students have been developing. Some projects were years in the making.

“A lot of students will go on to do a presentation like this about their research or creative work at a professional conference for their discipline, so it’s a great way to practice those presentations for the work in your field,” said Andrea Gibson, director of research communication. “The strength of the event is that it is an all campus showcase … there’s really something for everyone.”

Students from more than 55 departments and schools participated in the event, which has been held in The Convo since 2005.

“We’re showcasing what we’re doing for our senior capstone,” said Gerrod Schirtzinger, a senior studying computer engineering who presented his project alongside his classmates.

Schirtzinger’s group project used similar sciences to what can be found in nanotechnology advancements.

“(The event is) important mainly for people to see what’s going on in the university,” he said.

Athens area elementary and middle school teachers also brought their students to the event.

“(It was) a great learning experience that helps broaden the minds of students,” said Katarina Radujkovic, a senior studying lighting design.

In some cases, students were required to participate in the expo as a part of the funding for their research programs. The event was organized by the offices of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and Graduate College.

“It’s great to see what other departments are doing,” said Glenn Pepe, a first year graduate student studying scene design. “Within one school you can have so many different fields. It was nice to have everyone show off their talents.”
