Ohio dropped its fourth consecutive match on Sunday at Akron. The 2-0 loss to the Zips moves the Bobcats record to 2-6 overall, and they will finish the season just 1-4 on the road.
Things went wrong early for Ohio, as it conceded the first goal off an Akron corner just 20 minutes into the match. The Bobcats really grew into the game after going behind, but once again, their finishing let them down.
Akron defended well to get to halftime up 1-0, and then really locked it down in the second half. Ohio did not generate very much offense in the second half, and defeat was secured when a loose ball in the Bobcats’ box was bundled over the line by Akron forward Carly Pcholinsky.
For the Bobcats, however, the focus will be on their inability to finish chances. This has been a common theme for Ohio, as it has consistently been able to create chances but has struggled to finish them all season.
Against the Zips, Ohio had more shots and more shots on target, but was held scoreless for the fourth time in eight games. The Bobcats’ finishing struggles have really hampered them this season, as Sunday was just the second time that they have been beaten by more than one goal.
Despite the loss, there were some positives for Ohio. Abby Townsend was the team’s best player once again, and continually threatened Akron with her pace on the wings. Junior Taylor Dickerson also impressed for the Bobcats, consistently getting in good positions in the box, but she was unable to finish the chances that fell her way.
Going forward, Ohio’s main objective should be to find someone that can finish the chances that Townsend has been able to create in almost every game. The Bobcats had that last season, and that is why Townsend had 12 assists.
With only two games left and the Bobcats well out of the chase for the MAC championship game, Ohio’s focus will turn to next year and getting ready for a full season.
Ohio will play its final two games next weekend at home against Kent State on Thursday and Buffalo on Sunday.
