Q: What is Transgender Awareness Week?
A: Transgender Awareness Week takes place Nov. 13-17 every year. Transgender Awareness Week is a time for trans folk and allies to come together to spread awareness of the discrimination, violence, injustice, and prejudice trans people experience on a daily basis. Education and advocacy are the main focus of Transgender Awareness Week with vigils, events, speakers, spoken word art, etc. to validate the experiences of trans folk when they are often not heard, and to work toward eradicating the inequality trans and gender non-conforming people face—especially violence. Trans Day of Remembrance follows Transgender Awareness Week to honor and remember the trans people that are brutally murdered every year.
Q: What is Trans Day of Remembrance?
A: Trans Day of Remembrance, occurring annually on Nov. 20, is a day dedicated to honoring and mourning victims of transphobia that has transpired to violence. Every year, trans folks are murdered due to transphobia, and unfortunately the number of victims continue to grow. This year, 25 trans people, (that we are aware of), have been murdered simply for being who they are. Trans Day of Remembrance memorializes those that have lost their lives to violence and also serves as a hope to educate and bring to light the injustice that trans folk face on a daily basis—sometimes even resulting in death. Trans Day of Remembrance is often practiced by vigils with poems, songs, shared stories, and videos.
