After almost 20 years of business, the Athena Grand movie theater, located at 1008 East State St., will close Jan. 5, 2025.
The Athena Grand’s Facebook account posted an announcement Wednesday thanking patrons for their support and assuring them the theater will remain open for the holiday season.
The announcement also said gift cards will remain usable until the theater closes, and unused gift cards can be redeemed at any time before the closure during normal business hours.
The announcement garnered around 1,300 reactions on Facebook with over 2,200 shares and 300 comments mourning the theater’s closure at the time of writing.
The Athena Grand is an independent theater unaffiliated with Regal, AMC or other companies to allow for lower prices, according to the theater’s website bio. It first opened Nov. 4, 2005, marking its closure at just under a year short of its 20th anniversary.
