Despite the Weaver twins being in the top 10 for most of the weekend, Ohio’s team effort fell short at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Megan Weaver finished 10th, Meryl Weaver finished tied for 13th, and the Bobcats placed seventh in the MAC Championships during the weekend at Longaberger Golf Course in Nashport, Ohio.
“I thought they played pretty well,” coach Kelly Ovington said. “We had some pretty difficult conditions, so playing through that I thought the scores we saw were pretty good.”
Led by the Weavers, the Bobcats finished in the top 10, but after shooting a team weekend-best 28-over-par 316 Saturday, Ohio was looking for a better finish Sunday.
“I definitely was hoping to move up on Toledo,” Ovington said. “We were only two strokes back going in, but some of the girls struggled a little bit.”
Both sisters were tied for eighth entering Sunday’s round. As a team, Ohio finished the three-round event shooting a 31-over 960.
Kent State won the team title shooting a 52-over-par 916 with its best effort coming Sunday when the Golden Flashes shot a 16-over-par 304. Kent State has won every MAC Championship since its beginning in 1998. Eastern Michigan’s Sarah Johnson took home the individual title shooting an even-par 216, going 1-under par on Sunday’s final round.
The MAC Championship concluded the Bobcats’ 2010-2011 season. It was also the final event for seniors Erin Cahill and Jordan Fesh.
“They’re both going to be missed; they both have been leaders on this team in several ways, whether it’s in the classroom or on the golf course and with the team,” Ovington said. “Our team unity is exceptional.”
