The Basketball Special Issue
From the editorial: We’re excited for the Ohio men’s basketball game against Akron on Tuesday night — and we hope you are, too.
As a matter of fact, it’ll be one of the few times that many of our reporters will be in The Convo not just to cover the game, but to have a grand old time.
To mark the occasion, we’ll be handing out 1,000 copies of a limited edition basketball tabloid at The Convo before the game. The 12-page edition will feature articles on both the women’s and men’s teams, and includes glimpses into the coaching styles of Saul Phillips and Bob Boldon.
You can read both of those stories, and more profiles, predictions and analysis below.
Men's basketball coach: Saul Phillips
If you walk into Ohio coach Saul Phillips' office in The Convo, a large plasma screen TV playing college basketball can be seen over your left shoulder.
There's a treadmill pushed against the far wall with a damp towel hugging its handles. A large window illuminates the room and displays a busy Richland Avenue.
Phillips isn't in his office, but the voice of college basketball commentator Dick Vitale can be heard from a few feet outside.
"The theory I have is that I sit around and think about basketball 18 hours a day," Phillips said. (Link)
Antonio Campbell: Antonio Campbell has never been "the guy" for the Bobcats before, but things have changed this season. (Link)
Jordan Dartis: Ohio coach Saul Phillips called freshman Jordan Dartis a “breath of fresh air." Teammate Doug Taylor called Dartis his best friend. (Link)
Women's Coach: Bob Boldon
When Bob Boldon was announced as the new women’s basketball coach March 28, 2013, he inherited a basketball team that had just finished its worst season in school history.
Ohio went 6-23.
“He has successful head coaching experience, has rebuilt programs and has won wherever he has been,” Ohio University Athletics Director Jim Schaus said. “A new era of Ohio women’s basketball is here.”
At the time, Boldon had just transformed Youngstown State from its worst season (zero wins) to its best in three years. (Link)
Dominique Doseck: Dominique Doseck never planned on staying in Athens. After growing up in The Plains, a few miles from Ohio University, and attending Athens High School, Doseck wasn't very keen on the idea of staying close to home for another four years. "Honestly, I wanted to get away from Athens, Ohio, if you could see that," Doseck said with a laugh. (Link)
Jasmine Weatherspoon: Height has always been an issue for Ohio. Recently, coach Bob Boldon joked that he recruits the shortest players available. With a roster dominated by guards and ball handlers, Boldon has gradually morphed players into flexible positions. Junior guard/forward Quiera Lampkins is the best example. (Link)
The Post predicts the OU Akron game: Its predicted to be a close one, but only one team can come out on top. (Link)
