Ah, September. The leaves are turning, the weather is cooling and no one will shut up about how much they love fall.
I’ve got some news for you: Fall isn’t as good as everyone says it is.
To the pumpkin-spice-latte-wielding mob that is surely preparing to hunt me down, just hear me out.
I get it. We all want to wear long pants and jackets and drink hot chocolate. Anyone who says they don’t want to do that is either an idiot or a liar. Or both.
But most of your conceptions about fall are wrong.
You want to wear jackets, drink hot beverages and sit by bonfires, right? Good luck. According to U.S. Climate Data, the average temperature in Athens is 78 degrees during September and 67 degrees in October. Hardly the weather for drinking pumpkin spice lattes and sitting by fires.
At one point, I was just like every other fall-loving person. I happily wore jackets, attended bonfires and sipped on pumpkin spice lattes. Then, after years of being bitterly disappointed by the ever-warming weather, I realized that everyone’s expectations for fall were just unrealistically high.
Every August, as fall approached, I’d get unreasonably excited. Football, changing leaves and comfortable temperatures awaited, how could I not be thrilled?
But, as I discovered, the concept of fall is better than the season itself. It was always unseasonably muggy, the leaves fell too early, my favorite football teams lost and I was left with a sour taste in my mouth as Halloween came to a close with my bag of candy half-empty.
Everything that you do in the fall, you could do just as easily during some other season. Winter is a more ideal time to wear jackets and long pants, summer is a better time for bonfires and spring just sucks.
Most people talk about how much they love fall in early August, but when the season actually rolls around, they all become quiet for a reason. They asked for a ride expecting a limousine, and a taxicab came to pick them up.
