Since the turn of the calendar, Ohio (10-6, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) has blitzed its way through MAC play. However, the same can be said about Akron, the 2024 MAC Champions, facing off against the preseason No.1, Ohio, on national TV Friday.
The two teams have combined for an 8-0 record throughout conference play. The Bobcats come in on a six-game winning streak, with the Zips posing the biggest threat to that streak they have faced.

History
Ohio put together an incredible season in 2023-24, but it would be amiss to mention that it ended in the MAC Semifinals at the hands of Akron and Enrique Freeman, an NBA draft pick and last year’s MAC Player of the Year.
The all-time record between the two teams stands at 30-20 in favor of Akron, although it’s been a 50-50 split over the last eight matchups. Historically, the home team has been the victor more often than not, with Ohio holding a 5-18 record when Akron hosts the matchup.

Akron notes
The Zips are tied for first in the MAC despite boasting four new starters this season. Nate Johnson is the only returning starter. Tavari Johnson, Shammah Scott, Amani Lyles and Evan Wilson are the team’s other returners, combining for eight total starts last season.
A bevy of productive transfers Akron brought in to replace the lost production has helped not just keep the Zips afloat but also keep the team in contention for the MAC title.
Player to watch: Nate Johnson
Coming off a 28-point performance against Kent State in Akron’s most recent game, Johnson, a senior has only continued to step up in conference play. The sole returner in the starting five is the team’s leading scorer and its most consistent disruptor on the defensive end.
