Green and White Review: Q&A with Mariah Byard and Kat Yelle

A pair of Ohio women's basketball players joined the Green and White Review this week.

Ohio women’s basketball’s Mariah Byard, a senior guard, and Kat Yelle, a redshirt junior guard, joined the Green and White Review this week as guests and talked about the upcoming season. Here’s a brief Q&A from our interview, which airs at 7 p.m. Thursday on WOUB AM 1340.

GWR: Coach Bob Boldon is often very blunt and honest with the press in interviews. What’s the craziest thing he’s said or done?

Kat Yelle: I don’t really know if he’s said anything crazy that stuck out. He’s just very direct, very blunt. I like that.

GWR: How cool was it to be a part of all the Bobcat Madness festivities, even if it was aimed at Saul Phillips and the men?

Mariah Byard: That was really cool, and I enjoyed that. I wish they had done it sooner because I didn’t do as well as I would’ve liked to (laughs). But I thought it was great for the men and great for us, too. Hopefully that will get more people out to our games as well.

GWR: Mariah, how hard is it to be the sole senior and leader for the team these last two seasons?

MB: It’s kind of like being a big sister, or sometimes a mom. It depends on the day. With my leadership style, I’m more of a lead-by-example person. I’m not the most vocal, but I try try to make sure everyone is doing the right thing. If something needs said, that’s when I’ll step up and say something.

GWR: Sophomore guard Yamonie Jenkins recently tweeted about her “cinnamon apples” and you got in on that. Has everyone been giving her a hard time this season?

KY: Yeah, ever since she got those apple cinnamon followers, that’ll be a joke that goes on all season. (laughs)

GWR: I heard she was also trying to get Twitter verified.

KY: Whoa, I did not hear about that! I guess I’ll have to check to see if she gets a blue check mark by her name.
