AlcoholEdu costs Ohio University $45,000

AlcoholEdu, an interactive online program created by EverFi, costs Ohio University $45,000.

Ohio University students living in residence halls had to pay $50 per guest if they wanted to have a friend to stay with them during Halloween weekend.

The $78,150 raised this year goes toward two things: funding AlcoholEdu and offsetting the cost of managing Halloween.

AlcoholEdu, an interactive online program created by the educational technology company EverFi, cost OU $45,000, according to Dan Pittman, an OU spokesman.

Freshmen and transfer students with less than 30 credit hours are required to take the course online before they start classes, Char Kopchick, assistant dean for campus involvement, said.

The university has mandated students take the course since 2005, Kopchick said.

Dom Prescenzi, a sophomore studying occupational health and safety, said he doesn’t remember much from the course.

“I remember there was a lot about don’t leave your drink unattended and stuff like that, which I think is probably a good thing, because a lot of kids coming to college probably don’t think of that,” he said.

Despite not remembering much from the course, Prescenzi said AlcoholEdu is a good idea.

“I think a lot of kids are kind of sheltered from that sort of stuff and they come to college and you’re kind of like blasted with this new atmosphere, so I think it’s a good thing to educate kids on that a little bit more," Prescenzi said. "I think it’s inevitable kids are going to drink in college.”
