Ohio University announced Tuesday that eight student-athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 following its series of proactive screenings.
Due to the positive tests, Ohio has halted all conditioning and training programs to prevent further spread of the virus.
The screenings were set up as a precautionary measure for athletes from football, men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball looking to start voluntary summer workouts.
As of July 8, 125 student-athletes have been tested. The university will not release the names of those affected. Those who’ve tested positive have been asked to return to their homes to isolate and self-quarantine.
After a seven-day waiting period, student-athletes are required to re-test before using the campus’ facilities. If they clear testing, the next step is to complete a pre-participation physical and gain medical clearance. Only after those steps have been completed may voluntary workouts resume.
