Athens High School football has picked up right where it left off during its 2012 campaign.
After finishing with an overall record of 11-2 a season ago, Athens began this season with a 62-19 rout over Gallia Academy.
This Friday, the Bulldogs will host their home opener against Watkins Memorial (1-0), which routed Briggs last weekend during their season opener, 62-0.
The Bulldogs, led by junior signal-caller Joey Burrow, are far from satisfied and continue their quest for a perfect season Friday night.
“We got beat by Gallia last season so we came into that game with a chip on our shoulder. We took it to them from the start,” Burrow said when asked about last week's match up. “We had a great gameplan."
Burrow leads the team through his stellar play at quarterback, but the 6-foot-3, 180-pound athlete mentioned two seniors who are the heart and soul of the Bulldogs.
“Freddy Stalder and Alex Goldberry were voted captains by our team. Their both seniors and our team leaders,” Burrow said.
Burrow is focused on his junior campaign and has a specific goal in mind for the 2013 Athens Bulldogs.
“Our goal as a team this season is to win the regional championship,” said Burrow, who registered 165 passing yards and a touchdown during the team's week one victory.
“That’s what we’re working for every day.”
The Athens offense as a whole is looking to increase the tempo and run the ball down the throats of their opponent, week in and week out.
“We would like to run the ball more and go as fast as we can,” Burrow explained. “I like to think of myself as a dual-threat [quarterback].”
