The Schoonover Center for Communication will house events for professionals from the E.W. Scripps Company to meet with students.
Scripps professionals will offer “Scripps kids” a look into the media industry. Though professionals from the E.W. Scripps Company might not have taken a college class in a while, they will be spending the day in an Ohio University academic building.
Employees of the E.W. Scripps Company will be in Athens for Scripps Day, Tuesday at the Schoonover Center for Communication, which offers students an opportunity to meet with employees of the E.W. Scripps Company, to learn about what’s happening in the communications field and network for future employment opportunities, according Scott Titsworth, dean of Scripps College of Communication.
“This is a chance for professionals from the Scripps Howard Company to come to Athens and really talk to students about some of the things really happening in the career field they will be going into,” Titsworth said. “It's also a really good chance for them to network with people they may very well end up working with.”
Scripps Day is a day and a half this year and some activities started Monday afternoon. Visiting professionals took a tour of new facilities, saw some student projects and had dinner with students they may potentially hire, Titsworth said.
Throughout Tuesday, students will have the opportunity to sit down with a professional and have their résumé critiqued. Also, there will be sessions all day starting at 10:30 a.m., with an opening session on innovation. Later, there will be more specific breakout sessions, such as “Future of News.” Then, the competition “Scripps Next Top Intern” will give students the chance to win $3,500 toward an internship.
The day will wrap up with a reception starting at about 4 p.m. thanking the E.W. Scripps Company for its support.
Bob Stewart, the director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, suggests that students should attend as much of the day as they can.
“Anything and everything you can attend, you should attend,” Stewart said. “Go to everything you can go to.”

Bill Reader, associate professor in the school of journalism, said students should attend because it's a great learning experience where students and professionals can discuss and debate topics in the world of communication.
“These (events) are put together for you guys,” Reader said. “So if you guys don’t go you're just missing the opportunity.”
He also added that it’s a good opportunity for students thinking about transferring into the Scripps College or students in other majors who are interested in media.
Gina Rossi, a senior studying strategic communications, said she is planning on attending the résumé critique and a seminar on the future of strategic communication.
“I think it will be a good experience,” Rossi said. “I’m a senior so hopefully it’ll help.”
Stewart wants students to realize the value of Scripps Day.
“It’s easy for students to see the word ‘Scripps’ and it’s just a part of your everyday world so you don't think of it as necessarily anything special that’s happening,” Stewart said. “But Scripps Day is a day where high level people in the Scripps Company have set aside to come to campus and meet students. It’s a special thing.”
